Caleb Kelly is an academic, event director and curator working in the area of the sound arts. He is the Program Director of the Bachelor of Art Theory and in 2015 he will be the Edgard Varèse Guest Professor at the TU Berlin.

 

In 2009 he published his first book, entitled Cracked Media: The Sound of Malfunction, through MIT Press. He has also edited Sound (MIT Press and Whitechapel Gallery in London), part of the Documents of Contemporary Art series. Kelly is currently researching his second book entitled, Gallery Sound for Bloomsbury Academic.

 

Kelly is a curator whose exhibitions deal with strategies for the display of contemporary art that is filled with sound. Mostly recently he co-curated a large exhibition entitled Sound Full: sound in contemporary Australian and New Zealand Art, at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the City Gallery in Wellington, NZ. He has curated sound exhibitions at Artspace, the Performance Space and ICAN. 

 

Kelly's research interests are focused in the sound arts, contemporary art, media arts and art theory. His research has led to a rethinking of how art is listened to, historically and in contemporary practice. Kelly leads the research group Sound and Materials http://www.soundandmaterials.com, a group that actively engages in the practice, history and critical theory of sound works that employ sound with and through materials.
